WOW a whole year has passed...

Posted by Tracey Keen on Friday, November 11, 2011,
since my last blog here! I'm actually not surprised...this has been a difficult year for many in Christchurch...earthquakes & snow, broken houses & roads & lives. Stress does crazy things to those of us needing thyroid hormone replacement - it increases the need, as does the cold weather! So Spring & Summer are welcome sights here...although today's wind is rather wicked, it just blew our chicken coop over so a rebuild is definitely on for this weekend!
I'm sure we are all looking forward to C...

Two important things to remember when getting a WTE script...

Posted by Tracey Keen on Wednesday, November 10, 2010,
1/ Make sure the doctor writes it correctly - tablet or capsule strength, total pills ordered AND the words Take as Directed... not Take 1 daily - This is particularly important if you are self-dosing and not strictly following the GP's dosing plan. You could end up with only 90 pills...enough for 1 per day for 90 days.
2/ Make sure whoever faxes your script to PCNZ (you or your pharmacist or dr) - keeps a record of when they sent it so the excuse..."We haven't received the script yet" can be ...

Read the latest from Janie Bowthorpe - Stop the Thyroid Madness

Posted by Tracey Keen on Thursday, June 10, 2010,
It happens often – someone will join a patient group, and right off the bat, you notice they are very defensive about certain subjects,  know-it-all argumentative, condescendingly overbearing, and/or paranoid.
They may quickly fly off the handle.  They might see implications in words that were never there. They can also be childish in their reactions, obsessive about certain topics or people, mistrustful of others, forgetful, combative, and/or jittery.
Even worse,...

Should Patients Self-Medicate???

Posted by Tracey Keen on Friday, April 23, 2010,
Please read Mary Shomon's response to this question.
http://thyroid.about.com/b/2010/04/22/should-thyroid-patients-self-medicate.htm?nl=1
and the comments below it.

Self-medication does not refer to those of us who decide our own daily dose based on our awareness of our own needs -
our doctors' prescribe our medication and order the relevant tests as necessary, so we are not putting our health at risk.
We are lucky enough to live in a country where we can access sympathetic doctors who are willin...

Save a Doctor who cares

Posted by Tracey Keen on Monday, April 12, 2010,
I want to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed:
"WITCH HUNT OF DR SARAH MYHILL"
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/witchhuntofdrsarahmyhill/

Doctor Myhill has come under fire from the GMC, presumably for her very helpful & informative website.
The GMC have formulated no actual allegations against her. However, on the basis of two complaints against her (not made by patients, but by other doctors), she has to appear before an Interim Order Panel on April 29th, when...

Here's some good News

Posted by Tracey Keen on Wednesday, March 24, 2010,

PCNZ will soon have 130mg WTE tablets available. This will be great for people on larger daily doses...in some cases halving the number of pills needing to be taken and most definitely cutting the cost involved with each prescription. We'd like to thank Scott from PCNZ for listening to our needs and finding a solution that works.

Inspiration for Today

"Don't let other people tell you what you want."
– Pat Riley

And that goes for our doctors - they are our employees - they work for us and we pay them for the service they provide. Just as we would a plumber or a builder.
And just as we would fire the plumber or the builder for not knowing their stuff - so we should fire the doctor who does not listen to our symptoms and work with us to improve our health!
All too often we are told, "You'll just have to learn to live with it" or "There is no ot...

We Need You!

Posted by Tracey Keen on Tuesday, February 16, 2010,
We need more email support personnel - any and all areas!
All you would have to do is allow me to put your email address on the contact page of the website and be supportive when people from your area email you. Most of the time, people want to find a dr in their area, ask medication questions or find others to talk to.
Also -
if/when others do contact you, would you be interested in organising a group?
Groups do not have to be anything too organised - just a cuppa at the local mall, or ...

Update on the availability of WTE in NZ

Posted by Tracey Keen on Wednesday, February 3, 2010,
Due to supply issues in the US, stocks of 65mg tablets of Naturethroid have run out. PCNZ have been compounding capsules to fill prescriptions. Compounded capsules are usually 60mg strength but PCNZ have been compounding 65mg capsules to fill scripts for 65mg tablets. They do have smaller strength tablets in stock.
The good news is that a shipment of Naturethroid is on its way from RLC Labs.
